A Mixed Run

Douglas Ward

Conductor’s name Zwierzynski, flagman’s name O’Keefe,
Headman’s name is Schnuckelheim, of whom the con is chief;
The engineman’s Nels Nelson, the fireman’s name La Voo;
That on the midnight local does constitute the crew.

Zwierzynski hails from Poland, O’Keefe was born in Cork,
Schnuckelheim from Neustadt came with parents to New York;
Nels Nelson came from Sweden, “Land of the Midnight Sun”;
His fireman came from sunny France to fire a midnight run.

The little red caboose behind the train, to them was home
With coffee pot and frying pans, blankets, brush and comb
That hung beside a looking-glass suspended by a chain
And swung in perfect rhythm with the motion of the train.
