New on the Site: Celebrating Caboose History

Beyond Caboose Falls—Preserving the Stories Behind Cabooses

We’ve added a new page to our website dedicated to the nicknames and slang used by railroad crews who worked in cabooses.

Cabooses

Cabooses were more than just another piece of rolling stock. They were rolling offices, bunkhouse, and even marketing tools. In the 1980s and 1990s, with the advent of new technology, the usefulness of cabooses began to fade. This new page is one way we’re working to keep the history alive.

What’s on the New Page?

  • Classic Caboose Nicknames: Discover why “birdcage,” “bone shaker,” and “zoo” came to be used as affectionate terms for less-than-desirable spaces.
  • Regional Slang: Learn why the Chicago & North Western called it a “waycar,” while others said “hack” or “doghouse.”
