B&O C-2240: Brecksville, Ohio

Baltimore Ohio C-2240 – Brecksville, Ohio

Historic Caboose

Tucked behind Brecksville City Hall, a restored piece of railroad history stands quietly: the Baltimore & Ohio C-2240, a 1929-built steel-framed caboose from the B&O’s iconic I-5 series. These cabooses marked the end of an era as the last cupola-style designs ever acquired by the B&O.

Featuring steel ends and wooden sides, the I-5 cabooses were built for durability. Remarkably, some remained in active service for over 50 years, surviving well into the Chessie System era of the early 1980s.

A Quirk of History

Look closely, and you’ll notice C-2240 rests on a mismatched set of B&O trucks (wheel assemblies). The B-end truck, stamped April 1936, likely replaced the original after years of wear—a testament to the caboose’s long service life. Both trucks and the frame bear B&O markings confirming their tie to C-2240, adding authenticity to its story.

Visit & Reflect

After a major cosmetic restoration, C-2240 now serves as a charming concession stand in the park behind City Hall. This quiet survivor is more than just a static display. C-2240 serves as a tangible link to railroading’s golden age. Next time you’re near Brecksville City Hall, grab a snack and imagine the stories this relic could tell: of cross-country journeys, railroad workers, and a bygone industrial era.
